Fashion Forecast: Golden Moments

by Gray Horan, Beadworks Providence

The Gold Standard is the ultimate measurement. The Golden Rule is the best way to live. And gold, favored by kings and emperors since ancient times, is the decoration of choice for festive occasions.

'Tis the season. 'Tis the time for festive golden touches.

These days, the escalating price of sterling silver is making precious gold seem downright affordable. No wonder fashion is moving in a golden direction.

Right now gold is a hot item this season, casting a warm glow that enhances every skin tone. That's good news during the coldest time of the year.

Gold beads, from traditional Bali daisies and seamless gold-filled balls to elaborate designs that defy geometry, enhance any strand of beads. Gold-toned Swarovski crystals are another way to make a fashionable holiday statement.

For added embellishment select a fanciful gold-filled toggle clasp or showcase a focal bead with a delicate vermeil bead cap. Designing a pair of earrings with an intricate gold-filled chandelier finding is another way to declare that your designs have the Midas touch.

You can also embrace this golden moment by using links of gold-filled chain and bits of gold-filled wire in your beaded jewelry designs. Or, intersperse a necklace with a few Chinese cloisonné beads. These artful beads are made according to a centuries-old tradition that often pairs gold filigree with colorful enamel in an elaborate pattern.

Native American jewelry has popularized the combination of turquoise and silver. This is a great look, but did you know that the pairing of turquoise and gold dates back to the ancient Egyptians? Legend has it that the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, was the most beautiful woman who ever lived. Queen Nefertiti knew a thing or two about accessorizing. She adorned herself in fabulous gold jewelry- turquoise and gold, lapis and gold, coral and gold, pearls and gold.

Be creative; see what wonderful qualities are unearthed when you use gold beads and findings with semi precious gemstones. We recommend using gold as the primary accent with pearls, peridot, lapis, garnet, moonstone, or black onyx. Our staff is happy to offer their advice - just ask them.

Beadworks carries a large assortment of gold beads and findings in a range of styles and prices. For added affordability we also stock a selection of superior quality gold plated and gilded beads.

We hope this holiday season brings you many golden moments. Indulge in its splendor. Go for the gold!
